Hawthorne Club

Regarding Richard’s post: The history of the Hawthorne Club goes
back to at least 1936 when it was the Hawthorne Pool Hall. It later
became Hawthorne Bar and then the Hawthorne Club. In 1941 Joe
Hobson and his brother Pick took over and ran games during WWII.
I remember Pick saying there was so much money around they didn’t
have time to count it all and just boxed it up and sent it to Reno.
By the time I got there in 1966 the club was down to one 21 game.
I remember asking the owner about old chips and he went into the basement
and got me one each of all of the obsolete ones. The place was acquired by
the El Capitan a few years ago along with the rest of the block and torn
down for a project that never happened. The large vertical sign was placed
at the north end of town. Photo credits: John Robertero and Jim Marsh.
