This is an area that we are casually researching.
There are many ways to accomplish publishing a magazine on-line. The simplest is that way old issues are on our website ( https://www.ccgtcc.com/magazine/index.aspx): Straight PDFs. These are easy but required the entire document to be download. And as Dave says, allows for too-easy sharing.
Another way is through a publishing platform. These include Adobe, Issuu and many others. They allow for more controlled viewing and limited (or turned off) download options. They can also be configured to only allow viewing from certain web pages, say member-only web pages on our club website. That prevents non-members from getting to the viewing pages.
Can people share log-in credentials? Sure but there are ways to make that painful enough that it's 'not worth it' to the member.
Can people take screen shots of everything, save them to a document and email them around? Sure, but you get low-quality documents.
The last 2 challenges are the same for any on-line platform, even things like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
If people are curious what the experience is like to read on-line, I have done a test with a magazine from way back (with Bill Akeman's permission), just click here:
https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/view/70520542/1996-11-vol-1-issue-3-ocr (then click ePaper Read)
You can scroll around, zoom and and out. Do basic searches, etc.
What do you think of the experience?
