Re: Just bring up slabbing chips

For those who have not been around the Club as many years as some of us, the whole slabbing debate went on 15+/- years ago and the membership soundly made it clear it was not welcome in the hobby.

We even allowed one or two of the big slabbing companies to have tables at the Convention but they could not persuade hardly anyone of the benefit.

Many of the early and current members started as coin collectors and they got out when slabbing started. On the surface it seems to be a great idea. When we talked with the slabbing companies they had no one with experience in the hobby to grade chips or to authenticate them. Yet they had already started grading and certifying chips.

The next biggest issue that everyone was concerned about what is what I'm told is still an issue with the coin hobby. One point on a rare coin can make $10,000+ difference in value. A lot of collectors feel the big dealers who slab hundreds of chips will always get an extra point on their grading compared to the collector who sends in a few every year. I'm not a coin collector so I don't know.

I bring this up as history for those who weren't around when that battle took place in the hobby. I will say I personally would fight to keep slabbing out of the hobby.
