This post is going to ramble a bit, so my apologies in advance.
An examination (and some questions) about a Paulson (or Paul-son, if you prefer) chip mold.
Why the name "4x4Suits (RHC)" ?
On the MoGH / ChipGuide, if you do a "Query" search on chip molds, you'll find (in the drop-down list) a mold called "4x4Suits (RHC)"-- translated, this is shorthand for a rim mold that has 4 sets of 4Suits (Spade-Diamond-Club-Heart, in that order) and in between those 4 graphics are 4 sets of "Hat & Cane" graphics made famous on Paulson chips, EXCEPT that the tip of the cane winds up on the RIGHT side of the top hat (= a REVERSE Hat & Cane, or abbreviated as "RHC"). On the traditional Paulson Hat & Cane, the cane tip winds up on the LEFT side of the top hat. Whew!!
Why the name "World THC" ?
It appears that this mold is also referred to as "World THC" - particularly where sets are involved, and possibly other uses. The "THC" is just an abbreviation for "Top Hat & Cane". And I don't know the derivation of "World"? Maybe it was a name given by Paulson, or perhaps by Josh S. at Apache Poker Chips, or perhaps some other context?
Why my musing about all this?
The 2 different names aren't that unusual. But it appears this very limited chip mold was the last one Paulson made for private parties, around 2010 (?), before they stopped selling to non-casinos. Perhaps a last try at the economics of private-party sales, or the security, or for other reasons, they discontinued private sales. You can read their history as they went from Paul-son (initially private, but then a publicly traded company), to Gaming Partners International (a 2002 reverse-merger of Paulson into GPI with B&G being the senior player). And of course, GPI was bought by / merged into Angel Holdings in 2019 - a private company, based in Japan, with very scarce information any more.
Back to this mold ...
It was very rarely used, with only 3 buyers, according to ChipGuide records: (1) a series of 3 low-denomination "Grand Bahama Island" fantasy chips, apparently made to fill in / extend the rack of "Bahamia" chips from a Caribbean short-lived casino that, perhaps, had its rack available in quantity?; (2) two "PNY" 25c chips, apparently made to fill in / extend the rack of "President Casino New Yorker" day cruise rack chips, for an enterprise that never opened, and (3) an extensive set of denominations that say simply "Top Hat and Cane" and a denomination (without a dollar sign).
This last set of chips apparently was sold through Apache Poker Chips at one time. In fact, a yellow "1000" TH&C inlay chip still peaks out on Josh's start page, though they aren't for sale there anymore. Was he the exclusive intermediary between Paulson and others, or were they available direct from Paulson at one time? I don't know (and it doesn't particularly matter at this point).
It does appear that these "World THC" chips are of interest with set collectors. There's 2 offerings on ebay with some deep-pocket asking prices. I'm not knowledgeable enough to speak to the set collectibility of these.
My musing, after all of the above
is two-fold: Why the "World" name? And would Paulson/GPI/Angel ever consider a line of non-casino chips for the public? There seems to be a healthy demand for them.
Here's pics and links, if you want to see more. First is all the chips listed on ChipGuide with this mold; Second is a $1 chip which best shows the contrast for the 4 suits & 4 reverse H&C's. The rest are links.
