I would usually stop at the Mina Club on my trips through
town and talk with 94 year old Willie Wolfe. He said he
accidentally burned the original place down while burning
leaves. He dealt 21 at the old Montgomery Pass casino with
a .38 under and the table which he used once. The Helen and
Cowboy Bar was another stop. The Cowboy sat on a bench outside
while Helen tended bar. She was an interesting old gal and
gave me a tour of the the dance hall in back where a lot of events
were held. Once she gave me some old poker chips that were
used in the bar. The last photo shows what’s left of it on the right.
Baker’s Bar was closed but I managed to get inside. There was an
old 21 table but I couldn’t find any chips in all the trash that
was strewn around. My boss at the Overland knew Fay Baker
who was involved in various clubs around Reno. There’s an entry
in Kling on him. Peter Simon of Pop’s Oasis was involved in mining
in Mina. It was a wild place at one time.
