Searchlight (repeat or don't repeat??)

A couple of years ago I did a series of posts on small Nevada towns. I kept all of the files, in case I wanted to repeat the posts. This is one of the posts.

I haven't added any new stuff to the files, so they will be pretty much duplicates of what I posted the first time. Do you want me to continue posting them, or don't post the re-runs??

Searchlight

This popular casino and brothel was owned and operated by Willie Martello who came to Searchlight in 1947. The first swimming pool in the history of Searchlight was built here, for the prostitutes. One day a week the pool was reserved for the kids of Searchlight, many of whom learned to swim here…including future Nevada Senator Harry Reid. The original El Rey burned down in 1962. It did reopen, in the old Crystal Club across the street, which was smaller, but it never regained the popularity of the original El Rey.

For decades the Nugget was known for selling their coffee for .10 a cup. The small-town casino was owned and operated by Warren and Verlie Doing since 1967, when they bought Sandy’s Club. In 1979 they constructed the current building.

The Oasis was another of Searchlight’s brothels, this one owned, in the 1950’s, by Belle and Swede Norheim. Casino in the front; cribs in the back. Later this building was purchased by Warren and Verlie Doing. They leased it out and it was operated as an antique shop for several years. The Oasis calendar shown here was at the antique shop for years. Every time we went through town we stopped and asked if the calendar was for sale yet. Finally, when the shop closed, we were able to buy the calendar, along with the dice and the newspaper ad that were displayed with it.
