Austin was one of my favorite towns. I would always stop
in the Golden and talk with Clara Williams (Mom early 70s).
She claimed to be the oldest 21 dealer in the state and ran
the place by herself. She used to have a place across the street
called Mom’s and used Mom’s $5 chips on her 21 game. she
used Tahoe Country Club chips for ones. I think the chips
marked Golden were issued by her son Jimmy after she died.
She kept a box of $25 Mom’s under the bar and would give
me some one whenever I was in town. Jimmy (who did time
in NSP for cattle rustling) later turned the place into an antique
shop. A while back a relative re-opened the place as a bar but
it’s been a while since I’ve been in town and I don’t know if
the place is still open.
