Don't know if it happens all the time but I've had the same thing happen to me. Seller never responded to my inquiries as to what happened either.

I sometimes see auctions that have a line in the description like "I reserve the right to cancel or end the auction at any time". So I guess eBay doesn't seem to mind as long as they get there listing fee.
