Re: Reno Area Poker Question
In Response To: Reno Area Poker Question ()

Sure, I lived in Reno in the early '80s. The Peppermill had a small room with five tables, but downtown there were rooms at Circus (10 tables), Harold's Club 8-10 depending on the early 80s when they were under the escalator, or about 84 when they were on the mezzanine, or late 80s in the room next door - main floor. The Club Cal-Neva had a dozen tables on the second floor. Most of those games were $1-3 spread Texas Hold'em and some 7-card stud. The Eldorado had a room periodically in the main casino with about eight tables. The best two rooms were at Harrah's, with ten games on the Center Street side across the arch next to the sportsbook and the Flamingo.

Harrah's was my favorite spot, with Larry Alsop as the manager. The 7-stud games were 50-cent ante and $1-$5 until an open pair or 5th street and then $10. Hold'em started at noon - $2 to $10 spread. Occasionally late at night, we'd get a higher limit or pot limit game with Freddy Deeb, Tuna Lund, Kenny the Clone, or other good players in action. Then they f-ed with the room and put it on the casino floor near the bus station. Then they shoved it into an old Keno lounge in the main casino, and I was done playing there.

Across Virginia Street, the Reno Flamingo Hilton had great games and then moved the room to the Sierra Street side, and it was probably a dozen games. Good action with some great players and WSOP stars like Ray Zee, John Rose, and Brad Dougherty (10K winner). They had a lot of tournaments, too, as did the MGM - Bally's, which moved the room around as often as possible. $5-10 and $10-20 were good games.

If you were lucky, you could also play downstairs at the Reno Horseshoe Club, where games included players like David Slansky, Roy Ritner, Joe Harold - and tough players from Tahoe, sometimes dealt by Clay Brownlee. It was the only semi-regular no-limit or pot-limit game in town.

To be thorough, there was a game at Mr. C's, at the Onslow, the Comstock, and the Silver Spur in the 80s.
