Walt: Use your powers for good, not evil
In Response To: Re: SNCCC ELECTION ( NEW ) ()

Build, don't destroy. You talked people into joining the CLUB, not a person. Whether Jerry or James is the titular head of the organization, all members should support the club and its endeavors. Getting people to quit (which would plain and simple be out of personal spite and benefits the club in no way whatsoever) is tantamount to an insurrection. No better than the current twitter walkout, too. Why hurt the club just because your candidate didn't win? Are you going to move to Canada or Jupiter or wherever all those celebrities threatened to go if Trump was elected/re-elected? Are you going to take everyone with you?

I think you should accept James' offer to have a phone discussion (and keep it a discussion, not a shouting match). I doubt very much that he's going to change your mind about whom to vote for (and that's ok). But at least you can listen to what he has to say, which will go miles toward showing the world that you're not closed-minded.

Here's a little personal story... I once served on a Little League board. When I joined, there were 17 board members. They needed someone to be the Commissioner to schedule games with neighboring little leagues (we were too small to just play each other over and over in each division). The commissioner has duties and represents the league when meeting with other leagues, but beyond that, my vote was just one of many when deciding which color socks the girls farm softball teams would wear this season (yes, that was quite a debate, believe it or not). Meetings went on forever (particularly when they were held at a local mexican restaurant and SOME individuals enjoyed too many beers). I was managing one of my son's teams, assisting with my other son's team, and umpiring 40+ games per season (unpaid). I felt my BOARD presence was unnecessary and asked if I could skip board meetings but still handle commissioner stuff (answer: no). After about 6 months, I suggested that the board be trimmed down to 7 or 9 members to expedite decision making. The outrage that ensued was deafening. People thought I was making some kind of power grab, in spite of the fact that I said I'd be the first to resign, but still act as commissioner (my "board job"). One person decided that my suggested warranted asking for the current President's resignation (what?). Long story short (haha), one of the things I pointed out to everyone was that any 7 or 9 (or 5 for that matter) of us could BE THE BOARD and anyone willing to serve as President would likely do a decent job. The rest of us (and other volunteers) were still needed to carry out various duties, research costs, acquire equipment, schedule games, and so on. The following year, it was agreed not to replace departing board members with new board members (many were parents whose kids were "aging out" of the program). And wouldn't you know it? Games still got played. Kids still had fun. And life went on. So, too, will the SNCCC no matter who sits on the coveted throne. But only as long as people like yourself don't talk the worker bees (volunteers, general members, etc) into leaving the hive. By the way, what was my reward for streamlining the organization? They made me President 2 years later. Dammit. My plan backfired (but it was an honor and we got some really nice projects done that improved the league).

Anyway, let's not destroy the organization by threatening to kick the pilings out from under the pier. Vote however you wish. Get as informed as you like. Talk to both/all candidates. And don't add me to the nomination list.
