Re: Today's ashtray (s)
In Response To: Today's ashtray (s) ()

This location has been a bar since 1869. The original building burned in 1905 and was replaced
in 1909. It was the Central bar prior to being named the Gem. It was a popular locals hang-out
for many years before being torn down in 1982. I've had a few beers in here myself and except
for the roulette table being replaced by a poker table it looked exactly the same as the 1943
photo. The entire block shown in the PC was was also torn down for for an expansion of the new
Star Casino. Nothing was ever developed however and many locals hoped the Star would not
be successful. It wasn't. (Source: Saloons of Nevada by Ray Smith).
