John and Walt spotted the fake - silvery dollar

The 1888 Morgan Dollar is as big a humbug as Frank Morgan in his Wizard of Oz suit! The coin is not magnetic (which surprised me) and is in too good of a condition to be that old - not a scratch on its Full-Moon-White surface, and no signs of tarnish. It has a bit of "weight" to it but nowhere near as heavy as the 1923 Peace Dollar. Which seems to be the real McCoy. 1888 Morgan also fails the Silver Sniff Test - it does not smell like silver. No idea of its composition - too heavy to be all aluminum - maybe antimony or cadmium or some other junk the Chinese wanted to be rid of. Set me back $5. Whereas 1923 Peace smells like silver, has a "patina" of tarnish and cost $30 which is the approximate fair value of a real silver dollar of that type. But I was taking a risk on buying both of them.

So - who wants a fake silver dollar? Good for stuffing in a parking meter for an hour's shopping time! Or - drop it down the big shaft on Oak Island and watch the treasure-hunters go wild!!!
