Seems like the fractured examples were more popular than those w/o fracture through the years.

When you examine a ringed ivory by holding it up to a light bulb and it has a fracture, you'll see light passing through -- unless the the fracture was filled in with putty and black ink marker and that can be easilly noticed due to gloss. The same when a seller fills in the nerve hole.
