Atomic Testing & Culture In Las Vegas

Aside from casino history being a major part in the history of Las Vegas and Nevada there is something that I'm sure most people didn't know about. Today we are talking about the atomic testing that took place from the 50s up until the early 90s that used to happen just 65 miles from Fremont St. I didn't know about this information until I learned about it last week in class. These tests were originally done above ground until 1963 when the Limited Test Ban Treaty was passed. Over 900 atomic tests were conducted on Nevada federal land and a majority of them just under 100 miles away from Las Vegas. Las Vegas did very well with this atomic culture and thrived. Creating tours that took visitors up close to the tests for them to view them and see what would happen. Visitors would also be able to see the mushroom clouds from downtown during the early mornings hours or in the middle of the day. Enjoy!

If you guys have any chips or memorabilia with atomic testing on it, share it! I'd love to see what kinds of things they had created back in the day.
