The final process of finishing chips is grinding them to size. The wheel that does the grinding is silica and leaves a faint white ‘dust’ on finished chips. Still the same for all our chips today. Has been so for at least 40 years. Looks like fine chalk dust.
Lead dust residue is bluish silver.
