My Crazy Catalina Island Adventure

Year's ago when I lived in Southern California, I bought a houseboat and kept it in a San Pedro Marina. I outfitted the boat for a 26 mile ocean crossing ... I checked on the weather and left Angels Light & L.A. Harbor west to Santa Catalina Island .... this boat was only a coastal cruiser at best, but I wanted to meet my friends in Avalon Catalina ... this voyage took about 1/12 hours ... I could have made better time, but it was a little scary ... giant cargo ships passing by in the open channel between L.A. and Catalina Island .... I rented a buoy in the harbor and stayed the night ... boy did I need a stiff drink! Again I checked the weather and left Catalina harbor at daybreak .... some large swells on the way back to L.A. harbor ... but still good ... about a 1/2 mile from Angels Gate harbor entrance ... a fog bank rolled in and I did not have radar ... just a fog horn ... I was now saying a few prayers ... out of nowhere a Coast Guard small boat came up my stern and said ... are you crazy? that house boat should stay inside the protective waters ... they led into safety and boy did I thank them for the help in the fog ... that was the first & last time I left the big harbor. After the summer was over ... I trailered the houseboat to my house in Lake Mead, Nevada where it really belonged. Enjoy the pictures and do not try this at home ... take care Captain Rich of the MV RICHRIS (Rich & Chris) wife ...
