Re: What's the Hype?! New China, Mapes, Money Tree

There was a Bill Borland / World-Wide Casino Exchange connection to some of the Mapes & Money Tree chips...

As I recall it, when Mapes/Money Tree closed & declared liquidation-bankruptcy back in 1982 or so, there was an auction for all their stuff. Proceeds to go to the creditors.

Evidently, Borland bid on a bunch of their chips, and perhaps other stuff too. But... Gaming Control wanted those items excluded from the auction. There was a dispute about whether federal bankruptcy law or NGCB wishes took precedence. Not sure how it worked out, though Borland wound up with a stock of chips.

He advertised selling those chips in a 1-inch x 1 column ad in Gambling Times as "WWCE, Bill Borland, debtor-in-possession" (whatever that means).

I had just started casually collecting chips, and was a subscriber to Gambling Times. I sent for his chip sales list, and among other early purchases were a few Mapes / Money Tree / and Mapes-Money Tree chips. That was my first exposure to Borland and his chip lists.
