This summer the family and I are planning a cross country road trip that will span approximately 2 weeks and cover around 5000 miles. We are planning to stay in the Reno area for 1-2 nights and are trying to find someplace nice to stay without breaking the bank. I have been through Reno once but that was almost 20 years ago and I was only 17 at the time so that doesn't really help. Any advice on where to stay, what to do, where to eat, etc.... would be greatly appreciated.

We will be traveling with our two children (7 and 4) so a safe area is a must and it would be nice to have some things to do (gambling as well) and eat in the general vicinity. A lot of the reviews I've been reading are pretty disappointing mainly as to things being dirty, rundown, homeless people, etc... so hopefully I can get some current and reliable information from you guys. Also, hotel prices seem to be awfully high (at least compared to Las Vegas) for the quality of rooms you get.
