I would always stop in the Gem Bar when I was in Winnemucca. It was a rather drab place
with five or six Bally slot machines, a poker game, and a sports book. I remember those round
ashtrays and sticking one in my pocket. Bob Cashell from Reno took over Joe Mackies properties
after he was killed in a plane crash and the Gem, along with some other buildings on Bridge St.
were eventually torn down. The sports book was moved to the Winners Inn and called the Gem
Sports Book.
