Soak a lot of copper pennies in a mix of vinegar and salt. I don't know the exact science, but while the mixture will clean the coins it will also dissolve some copper into the solution.

Then place a clean steel penny in the solution. The steel will attract the copper from the solution and give your coin a thin coating.
