I once mailed a chip to - somewhere in Texas? - from North Hollywood, California. But the regular clerk was out on Christmas holiday. A temp was handling all mailings. Apparently she scanned the "From" address instead of the "To" address. Well - it would have been okay if the letter returned to my house. But - much more interesting adventures - went to the Regional Sorting Center, then to some post office in Bakersfield, CA, then on to another Sorting Center. Think it finally ended up at every county seat in Texas, Fort Worth, Abilene, Oklahoma City. By this time, ten days had elapsed, my regular clerk was back in the office, and that's how I learned what had happened.

BUT - more merriment - she could not stop the small packet form its journey. Only a Postal Bar Code Inspector could do that! Otherwise, it would be "tampering with the mail." Eventually it ended up in what seemed to be an executive postal office, and the World Assistant Postmaster General or somebody with four stripes on their uniform, with authority to do so --mercifully peeled off the bad label and affixed one with the correct destination.

And then the chip got there, pronto.

One wrong number in an address or ZIP code majorly screws up the mail! And one wrong scan by a clerk with good intentions - hoo boy, no telling where that puppy will end up!
