Polish and German women from war-torn Europe ~~~
In Response To: DOMESTIC HELP ()

~~~was not an uncommon sight in Brooklyn. In fact, as kids we knew them by first names from friends' homes... always giving us a cookie or slice of freshly-baked bread with butter. My mother had two girls from Germany; Freider and Gussie, though Gussie stayed with us the longest. Gussie had a brother who came over before 1938, and opened a well-known auto dealership, but wasn't able to take in his sister. Gussie had a friend with a son Freiderick who was older than I, though we got along very well when they would stop over on Sunday.
