NCR Convention Bound Day 16

Rapid City South Dakota has an incredible number of things to see and do. Yesterday we spent the day touring the Black Hills and were able to see Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, and of course we were out on the range.
Crazy Horse was a Sioux leader known for his gutsy individuality and participation in the Battle of Little Big Horn against General George Custer. Crazy Horse was a close associate of Sitting Bull, and both were rebellious against the federal government and the reservation system.

His legacy is celebrated in the Crazy Horse Memorial, an uncompleted monumental sculpture located in the Black Hills, not far from Mount Rushmore. The monument was started in 1948 and when completed the Crazy Horse Memorial would be the largest sculpture in the world. I will say the Fred and I were here about 15 years ago and they have not gotten any further than what we say yesterday,

Anyway, you may remember seeing Fred at Wall drug up close and personal with Mount Rushmore. Yesterday I was not able to get him as close to the monument as the day before. Mount Rushmore was actually conceived to promote tourism to the area. Each sculpture is about 60 feet and the four presidents were chosen because of their impact on American History.

While we were in the Black Hills and visiting Custer State Park I said to Fred “Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam, Where the deer, antelope and long horns play, Where seldom is heard a discouraging word, And the skies are not cloudy all day.” He said stick around and let’s see how the day plays out. (You have to love the shameless use of song lyrics.) To be clear the buffalo you see was crossing the street right in front of our car. We made the decision that if it were a fight the buffalo would win so we let him cross the street when he was good and ready.

More from South Dakota tomorrow
