Brass Core Hyatt Regency Tahoe $500 listed on ebay

My high denomination 500 chip that was produced in 1990 is for auction on ebay. To my knowledge, none of the $500 chips have been reproduced or remanufactured despite the efforts of some collectors to have some of the Hyatt Tahoe chip made with non-official colors. It's unfortunate that some chip reference guides include "notes" on all the brass core chips that Hyatt used, warning that there are a significant number of remanufactured chips in existence.

The white $500 has not been remanufactured to my knowledge and the chip I'm auctioning on ebay is a genuine white PMSC chip made by Reliable Engraving. This large denomination is seldom available to collectors and has a "*" value code in The Chip Rack catalog.

This chip is unusual in that it continues the practice at Hyatt Regency Tahoe of coding the PMSC chips with a pattern of segments that make it easy to identify the chip denomination. The $500 for instance has five pie shaped segments of metal arranged on the reverse of the chip to easily tell this is a 5 x $100 denomination chip. I don't know whether the PMSC $500 denomination has been withdrawn from play by the casino.

You should know that Hyatt did reorder PMSC chips a few years later than 1990 and these are of a new design with lighter weight metal used in the manufacture of the chips. To my knowledge, only the lower denomination chips were reordered with this change (which were probably less expensive to make). The $2.50 chips were very popular with collectors and many disappeared from the casino cage and ended in collections. Nothing wrong with that, and the casino was very friendly with collectors in selling the $2.50s (in particular) out of the cage on request. Chips made with lighter metal seem to all have shallow ridges around the circumference of the chip; the $500 does not have these markings.

I started the auction of this chip at about $200, mainly to establish a sales price and (hopefully) drop the need for the asterisk in the Value field of TCR in the next edition.
