A GUEST AUTHOR’s HARVEST STORY

The St. Regis Reservation, Upstate New York Casinos and the Oneida

By Carl Shalit

Now that you published one story, here's another. This one just happened this week, the week before Memorial Day, 2016.
As usual, I combined gathering with work travel. I had to be in Syracuse NY so, rather than go directly, about a 5 1/2 hour drive, I went by way of the Akwesasne Casino in upstate New York. That's also about 5 1/2 hours from home but then it's another 3 plus hours to Syracuse (more on that part of the trip later).
My main point in going to the Akwesasne was not so much to gather chips (but of course I would have if I could have) but more to try to discover some of the history of the illegal gaming done on the St. Regis Reservation.
I couldn't find anyone who could tell me anything! Maybe I could have if I had a couple of days to spend in the area but I gave it about three hours. I checked with pit bosses, the floor manager, security, and tried to find the Indian Gaming Commission. I was told that the Commission had an office in the casino but that I couldn't get to it!
I left the casino and found the Akwesasne management office. they told me that the Gaming Commission was back on the other side of the casino. So I backtracked to try to find that.
I found their personnel office where I was told the Gaming Commission was located in the casino! When I explained what happened in the casino, they told me a secret(!) back way into the office. Sounded good but I still couldn't find it.
I then figured I would try some barrooms (couldn't find any), antique shops (couldn't find any), and smoke shops (found lots of them). Even thought there were some old-timers in them, nobody could, or would, tell me anything.
I also showed everyone I spoke to the St. Regis Mohawk images from the Chipguide but everybody claimed they had never seen them.
So, after about three wasted hours on the reservation, except that I did walk away with about $40.00 from a crap table, I headed towards Syracuse. I knew how to go but I put on my GPS.
After a couple of miles, it said to turn right. I did so out of curiosity. That took me onto a toll bridge to Canada with no way to turn around. So I went into Canada and, when asked why I was going to Canada, I explained what happened. The customs agent eventually told me how to turn around and go back over the bridge. So I again had to pay the toll and now go through US customs.
After the usual questions about citizenship, etc., I was asked how long I had been on Canada. I said about 5 minutes! That took a bit of explaining!
For the next ten miles or so, the GPS kept telling me to make a legal u-turn and apparently go over the bridge again. Finally it gave up, until I came to the next bridge to Canada. This time I ignored it but it again kept telling me to make a legal u-turn for several miles.
Only thing I can think of is that there's a highway on the Canadian side which is much faster than the road I was on in New York. What the GPS obviously did not know is how long it takes to go through Canadian and US customs!
So I eventually made it to Syracuse and of course had to visit Turning Stone and the new Yellow Brick Road casinos. FYI, those are both owned by the Oneida Indian Nation. Nothing new at Turning Stone but I did make my usual pleas to try to buy their not used drop chips which they absolutely refuse to sell.
So on to Yellow Brick Road. That facility is somewhat interesting. From what I could see, it's a strip mall which they took over completely. it was surprisingly busy but it is closer to Syracuse and it was now after dinner time so maybe it shouldn't be surprising.
I gathered my chips from there (plus about $60.00 at the crap table) and headed to my motel to prepare for the next morning with a client.

GUEST AUTHORS OF HARVEST STORIES

A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO I STARTED HAVING A GUEST AUTHOR AND HIS/HER HARVEST STORY AS OFTEN AS I COULD.
AT THIS WRITING I ONLY HAVE 25 STORIES TO SHARE. I AM HOPING THAT A FEW MORE AUTHORS WILL STEP UP TO THE PLATE, AND THESE VERY PROLIFIC “CHIPPERS” WILL COME UP WITH A FEW MORE. I WILL RE RUN THESE STORIES THROUGH THE COMING YEAR. AND ADD STORIES AS THE POD ROLLS ALONG.
THESE STORIES ARE ALWAYS INFORMATIVE AND USUALLY HAVE A BIT OF TONGUE AND CHEEK HUMOUR.
LET’S SHARE WITH OTHERS DIFFERENT WAYS OF HARVESTING, THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS THAT WE HAVE FACED OUT THERE WHILE WE WERE HARVESTING.
THANKS FOR READING THIS LITTLE INFO-MERCIAL.

PERSONAL HARVESTING STORIES

RIVIERA LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

By:RICHARD “REGGIE” GUMMER

GOOD DAY, EVERYONE. THE RIVIERA WAS THE HOME OF MY FIRST CC-GTCC CONVENTION. NANCY AND I WERE MARRIED ON AUGUST 5, 2007 AND WERE LIVING OUT OF OUR RECREATION VEHICLE A 32 FOOT CLASS C RV. WE HAD DRIVEN THE RV AND HER PRIUS TO LAS VEGAS AND MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE HER CAR SHIPPED TO ASHLAND NORTH CAROLINA. WE KNEW WE WERE GOING TO SETTLE IN TENNESSEE OR NORTHERN ALABAMA AT THAT POINT. YES, WE DROVE THE RV ACROSS THE USA.
MEANWHILE, AT THE RIVIERA, AFTER WE PULLED IN AND GOT A ROOM; WE SNUCK OUR CAT INTO THE ROOM, AND PARKED THE RV OUT IN THE BACK PARKING LOT. IT WAS GETTING LATE, AND I WAS EXITED ABOUT IT BEING MY FIRST CONVENTION.
THIS WAS TO BE A VERY IMPORTANT EVENING TO ME, THIS WAS THE EVENING I WAS INTRODUCED FORMALLY TO GREG SUSONG. I HAD MADE MANY TRADES THROUGH THE MAIL AND PURCHASED CHIPS FROM HIM OVER THE PAST 2-3 YEARS WHEN I FIRST GOT SERIOUS ABOUT COLLECTING CHIPS. I MET HIM AT A POKER TABLE AT THE RIVIERA, WHERE I SAT DOWN WITH A HALF A DOZEN OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CLUB. I HAD NOT EVEN BEEN A MEMBER A YEAR AT THE TIME. WHILE WE WERE CHIT CHATTING AT THE POKER TABLE I WAS GOING THROUGH EVERY CHIP OF THE RIVIERA FOR ANY AND ALL OF THE VARIATIONS THAT THEY HAD. THIS WAS A VERY EASY HARVEST, MY PURPOSE FOR WRITING ABOUT THE RIVIERA IS THAT THIS PARTICULAR VISIT WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE OF MY FIRST MEETING OF GREG. I GOT TO KNOW HIM BETTER OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS UNTIL WE LOST HIM. THIS WAS A VERY SAD DAY FOR ALL OF US.
WHEN I WENT TO CASH IN MY CHIPS AFTER PLAYING POKER FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS THAT FIRST TIME, I NOTICE THEY HAD SOME COMMEMORATIVES SITTING OUT ON THE COUNTER, ONE WAS ANN NICOLE SMITH. THAT WAS ANOTHER MEMORY THAT CONVENTION OF 2007. YES, OF COURSE I DID GET ENOUGH CHIPS FROM THE RIVIERA. NOW SHE IS GONE AND ALL OF THE CHIPS ARE OBSOLETES…REGGIE

A PAIR TO DRAW TO

I am always trying to put things together that have some semblance of balance. Of course, that will always be in the eye of the beholder. Some of these may attract you the collector a little or a lot, no matter which way it attracts, please know I am always trying to help you out, with items you want at price that is fair. For now, I am going to do them every week, but as an unscheduled surprise feature…Thanks for looking. Reggie

If you have some ideas about compatible pairs please send them in to me. If it is possible and I happen to have the two, they will be put on the docket...reg

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS

It has come to my attention over the years, that there are several chip dealers and collector/traders that will not ship overseas. Of course, that is a personal call.
I do not mind shipping overseas-internationally. I do it out of courtesy to our international members and our international chippers, whether they are CC-GTCC members or not.
There are some things in my International shipping policy that you should know, and I will list them below:
• I will only ship to customers with pay pal accounts, or are willing to send cash safely through the mail* (*Please note; chips will not be sent until funds have been received by me.)
• When sending pay pal payment; please only USD (American Funds)
• I will only ship chips, other items such as dice, match books, or anything else that is NOT a chip, I will not ship; please do not even ask.
• You should understand even though I quote postage/handling rates in my order instructions, that international shipping could be a substantial amount more. I will endeavor to get as close to an exact postage quote from the USPS web site prior to mailing. Should I be incorrect on my figures I will issue a credit slip to you on your next order or ask for a balance to be added to my pay pal account.
• The newest information in reference to international mailings recently divulged to me by the USPS is that using bubble mailers will triple your cost; if it is not a uniform thickness and it is not flexible (is rigid and does not bend). Using a #10 envelope and corrugated paper with a maximum thickness of ¼ “, up to 5 chips can be mailed.
• Since, there is a special postal customs form that needs to be filled out, for each package(bubble mailer), you should know it always takes longer to mail a package internationally; (up to an hour) and you are required to go physically to a United States Post Office.
• As you can see it takes more time, and sometimes it requires more expense to do this, please know I do it out of love of our hobby. And I do not charge extra for the handling. Please always, make sure that your name and address is spelled correctly and the spaces between names and address (streets & avenues) are correct.
Thank you for reading this and I hope this makes it easier for us to communicate, ship and receive packages of those little round treasures we all so dearly love. Sincerely, Reggie

SET OF THE DAY

MANY YEARS AGO I STARTED MY POSTING, BY POSTING “A SET OF THE DAY” I THINK I HAD ABOUT 300-400 SETS ALL TOGETHER. THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN BACK THEN. AND WHEN I STARTED DOING “A PAGE A DAY” I INCLUDED BETTER SETS AS A CATEGORY.
BUT NOW; RATHER THAN HAVING MY BETTER SETS CATEGORY, I WILL START HAVING A REGULAR SET OF THE DAY WITH MY OTHER FEATURES WHEN I DISPLAY A “PAGE OF THE DAY”.
I AM REDUCING PRICES ON MOST OF THESE SETS, SOME WILL BE FACE VALUE, SO IF YOU SEE SOMETHING YOU LIKE AND WANT, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE IN SENDING ME AN EMAIL, PUTTING A SOLD SIGN ON THE CB IS NOT THE WAY TO GUARANTEE YOUR PURCHASE OR TRADE. SEE POD FOR P/H RATES. SEND ME AN EMAIL FOR ORDERS OR QUESTIONS…Reggie

MY WEB SITE

HOME OF 4500 TRADERS

Starting 2016, I have listed everything I have (all of my excel inventory +) on the collection library trader/for sale. Of course, many of you did not know that my previous listings were items I had more than one of. Now, everything; even the ones I only have 1 (one) of will be listed. Please know; none of these are from my personal collection. One more important point while searching for chips on my CL site; there are two settings for viewing my chips. One is a simply a long, long list of pictures and descriptions. Two is by Country/City/State/Casino alphabetical. You may request to change this at any time. And when you do I will leave it on that setting for a couple of days, or whatever you request within reason, before I change to help another chipper’s request.
Follow This Collection Library Link To Approximately +/- 4500 Trader Chips >>>: http://www.collectionlibrary.com/Index.asp?EvApp=mls.5117&sPageName=MyTraders
This will cause more work for me, and along with that will be the possibility of more errors, and chances for items to slip through the cracks. So, I apologize in advance for the times I do not clear off a listing after it has been sold. Also, on the other side of coin, there will be times I will find a very nice item that I had forgot to put on the “Collection Library” when I first got it. And now I am listing it just when you started looking for it.
*On the subject of trading, please know: When you spot something on my CL Trader/For Sale list that you really want, I need to get something that I can put into my collection, also; or it will be a cash sale. Because, to take in trade something I will in turn have to sell, (that is already in my collection) requires me to work twice as hard to complete the original transaction.
The total amount of chips listed on this site as traders and for sale are approximately 4500. This of course will fluctuate up and down, however this number should afford most collectors looking for a piece to put in their collection at least an opportunity to see a few chips not often offered.
Thanks for taking your time to read over this post, Reggie
*Please read thoroughly
