A GUEST AUTHOR’s HARVEST STORY

LARRY FLYNT’s LUCKY LADY GARDENA, CA

By: J. Eric Freedner

My story about the new Lucky Lady. I had been following the ups and downs of the Normandie Casino online - open, now closed, but actually still open . . . until news of Larry Flynt's purchase of the casino hit the news. But as you know, a big ruckus erupted between Larry and the City of Gardena which wanted a guarantee of $800,000 tax revenue per month in return for certain "favorable allowances." Mr. Flynt refused to cave in and kept the casino closed . . . for a few days. I recognized this as the classic poker-bluff.

Sure enough, the City caved in, and in a news release on July 19, it was announced that the Lucky Lady might open as soon as Friday, July 20. I read this on July 20 . . . and decided to drive down to Gardena to see for myself, with no great expectation that the casino would indeed be open.

But, surprise! The new Lucky Lady was open, in fact its grand opening, marked only by a workman hurriedly applying a new Lucky Lady decal to the front doors. It must have been hurriedly arranged - no balloons, flowers or that sort of thing. Just some dedicated gamblers playin' away . . . with new chips! Which, when I bought some at the Cage, turned out to have the naked lady on the inlay. Shocking, but fun! I had all of $65 with me at the time, and this went fast for 50¢, $1, and $5 chips. Walked around the tables and asked a dealer what those green chips were - $2 drop chips, she replied. Welllll . . . back to the cage for some of those, which the cashier graciously sold. But then - I spied some red chips in a rack and was told they were $3 drop chips - not currently on the tables. But, I asked the cashier, could I buy some as a collector? She shrugged and said it was all right with her. Next problem: no more cash!

Drove frantically around Gardena looking for a compatible ATM and sure enough, a block from the Hustler, the right bank appeared. So, with a newly-acquired $100 bankroll in my pocket, I raced back to the Lucky Lady and bought more chips, including those $3 ones.

Best chuckle of the night: seeing a patron approach the doors of the Lucky Lady, stop, and stare at the new decals. He did a double-take, as if he was on "Candid Camera." But the doors had a familiar look to them, so in he went. I can only imagine his surprise when he got a handful of naked lady chips for his game!

Anyway, that's one of the few casino grand openings that I ever attended, and pretty much all by accident.

PERSONAL HARVESTING STORIES

HON-DAH RESORT CASINO & CONFERNENCE CENTER
PINETOP, ARIZONA

By:RICHARD “REGGIE” GUMMER

THE HON-DAH CASINO IS IN THE EASTERN HALF AND MIDDLE OF ARIZONA, LITERALLY. NOT MUCH GOING ON AROUND THERE EXCEPT RANCHING AND CAMPING.
HOWEVER, THERE WAS A HOT TIME IN THE OLE CASINO THAT NIGHT. I GOT THERE LATE IN THE AFTERNOON, AND IMMEDIATELY IMMERSED MYSELF INTO A POKER GAME. THEY PLAYED OMAHA FOR A HALF AN HOUR, THEN HOLDEM FOR A HALF AN HOUR. IT WAS A FUN GAME AND I HARVESTED WHAT WAS NEEDED OVER THE SIX OR SEVEN HOURS. THE OFF DUTY DEALERS HUSTLED UP MY CHIP NEEDS, MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY WERE BORED WHEN THEY WERE NOT DEALING. LOT OF DRINKING WAS DONE DURING THAT TIME, YOURS TRULY HAD TO STOP ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH THE 6 OR 7 HOURS AND SWITCH OVER TO COFFEE. I HAD TO DRIVE BACK UP TO SHOW LOW TO MY MOTEL ROOM THAT WAS FURNISHED COMPLETELY IN EARLY GARAGE SALE AND EARLY SWAP MEET.
THIS IS A GOOD TIME TO TELL YOU WHY I DRIVE SO FAR TO A CASINO THAT I ONLY NEED A FEW CHIPS. MOSTLY, BECAUSE IT IS THERE, AND I HAD NOT BEEN THERE, YET. AND THIS TIME I AM PRETTY SURE I GOT ENOUGH CHIPS AT THIS HARVEST…REGGIE

I am always trying to put things together that have some semblance of balance. Of course, that will always be in the eye of the beholder. Some of these may attract you the collector a little or a lot, no matter which way it attracts, please know I am always trying to help you out, with items you want at price that is fair. For now, I am going to do them every week, but as an unscheduled surprise feature…Thanks for looking. Reggie

If you have some ideas about compatible pairs please send them in to me. If it is possible and I happen to have the two, they will be put on the docket...reg

THE GROWTH OF MY COLLECTION LIBRARY WEB SITE

In 2016, I listed everything I have (all of my excel inventory +) on the collection library trader/for sale. Of course, many of you did not know that my previous listings were items I had more than one of. Now, everything; even the chips I only have 1 (one) of will be listed. Please know; none of these are from my personal collection. One more important point while searching for chips on my CL site; there are two settings for viewing my chips. One is a simply a long, long list of pictures and descriptions. Two is by Country/City/State/Casino alphabetical. You may request me to change this at any time.
This will cause more work for me, and along with that will be the possibility of more errors, and chances for items to slip through the cracks. So, I apologize in advance for the times I do not clear off a listing after it has been sold. Also, on the other side of coin, there will be times I will find a very nice item that I had forgot to put on the “Collection Library” when I first got it. And now I am listing it just when you started looking for it.
*On the subject of trading, please know: When you spot something on my CL Trader/For Sale list the you really want, I need to get something that I can put into my collection or it will be a cash sale. Because, to take in trade something I will in turn have to sell, (that is already in my collection) requires me to work twice as hard to complete the original transaction.
Thanks for taking the time to read over this post, Reggie

GUEST AUTHORS OF HARVEST STORIES

LAST YEAR, I STARTED HAVING A GUEST AUTHOR AND HIS/HER HARVEST STORY AS OFTEN AS I COULD.
AT THIS WRITING I ONLY HAVE 25 STORIES TO SHARE. I AM HOPING THAT A FEW MORE AUTHORS WILL STEP UP TO THE PLATE, AND THESE VERY PROLIFIC “CHIPPERS” WILL COME UP WITH A FEW MORE. I WILL RE RUN THESE STORIES THROUGH THE COMING YEAR. AND ADD STORIES AS THE POD ROLLS ALONG.
THESE STORIES ARE ALWAYS INFORMATIVE AND USUALLY HAVE A BIT OF TONGUE AND CHEEK HUMOUR.
LET’S SHARE WITH OTHERS DIFFERENT WAYS OF HARVESTING, THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS THAT WE HAVE FACED OUT THERE WHILE WE WERE HARVESTING.
THANKS FOR READING THIS LITTLE INFO-MERCIAL.

SET OF THE DAY

MANY YEARS AGO I STARTED MY POSTING, BY POSTING “A SET OF THE DAY” I THINK I HAD ABOUT 300-400 SETS ALL TOGETHER. THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN BACK THEN. AND WHEN I STARTED DOING “A PAGE A DAY” I INCLUDED BETTER SETS AS A CATEGORY.
BUT NOW; RATHER THAN HAVING MY BETTER SETS CATEGORY, I WILL START HAVING A REGULAR SET OF THE DAY WITH MY OTHER FEATURES WHEN I DISPLAY A “PAGE OF THE DAY”.
I AM REDUCING PRICES ON MOST OF THESE SETS, SOME WILL BE FACE VALUE, SO IF YOU SEE SOMETHING YOU LIKE AND WANT, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE IN SENDING ME AN EMAIL, PUTTING A SOLD SIGN ON THE CB IS NOT THE WAY TO GUARANTEE YOUR PURCHASE OR TRADE. SEE POD FOR P/H RATES. SEND ME AN EMAIL FOR ORDERS OR QUESTIONS…Reggie
