painted red

Quarters (and nickels) are also painted red (or I have seen blue as well) to "prime" jukeboxes. The vendor and the bar owner generally split the proceeds 50/50. They will have some coins ready for the bartender to get the music going so patrons will join in. They use the painted coins, which are also separated from the cashbox so they are not considered among the day's profits to be split.
