I received a reply from Susan Maltby. . .

. . . and she is interested in doing a follow-up article in a future Coin World column on PVC damaged chips. Her well-read cloumns only appear four times a year, so she could not tell in which issue it will be published, only to be patient.

Collectors really ought to periodically remove some of their chips from plastic holders and inspect their chips for damage and not just the red clay composition chips. Check your brass center inlay chips for a gooey-sticky residue from PVC damage as well. You can't detect the damage from the outside but you can surely feel it on the brass surface.

Or you can simply ignore the problem and hope that it will magically go away.
