It would appear to me that Susan Maltby is an Anthropologist by training, not a chemist. And the article you referenced is not written by her but by a coin dealer who quotes her "no, no, no". Her reputation appears to be as a "conservationist".

Again, I don't dispute that coins can be damaged by certain holders. It's only the mechanism that's in question, and whether that can be extrapolated to the storage of casino chips.

I also collected coins since the 1970's. Chips only for the past 20 or so years.
