They once had a practical application

The executive limousine had running boards so some agents could ride close to the president. I think they were eliminated in the fifties, and the SS agents had to jog.

The name goes back much further to early automobiles and were useful in boarding the high-bodied cars of the day. They also helped keep you from "running over" the dogs that always seemed to chase these noisy machines grin .
