I've never seen them, but Janice lists a number of 1980 dollar tokens made by Letcher Mint that are samples with unusual materials or surfaces. They are:

Antique Brass
Antique Copper
Brass Plated
Dark Plated
Medium Dark Plated

I'm guessing you have on of them. I'd be interested in seeing a scan.
