I agree. In my opinion, some guy with a branding iron burned the "C" onto the chip. If the "C"s were branded evenly I would say he attached the iron to a drill press and stamped each chip. However, each "C" seems to be unevenly branded. Done by hand.

I also agree with Robert that the "C" would make the chip less desireable
