Don't know if it was every opened, but...

IMO - I bet Oprah paid to have it opened, it was, and there was nothing of interest in it. Oprah didn't want another "Al Capone's Vault" on her record, so she dropped the whole thing once she knew the contents.

Two things I found on Google:

A quote from two brothers who may have seen the contents after it was cleaned out:

"Easy to figure out, Barney's Casino is the taller part of Bill's next to the old Ceasers, The part next to Harrah's is the old Harrah's Sports Book. The two parts were combined to make Bill's Casino. Holes were knocked into the existing wall betweent the two to connect them. When it first opened, there was a McDonalds above the old Barney's part, and a Bennigan's resturant in the main part. I suspect this Safe is part of the old Barney's, and if I remember correctly that safe will be empty, as when Harrah's first took over Barney's I was one of the first people in there to do some clean up and there was a big safe that was open, there were some old cards, dice, and Barney's $1 gaming chips but not much else in the safe. It was too big too move, so they just walled it up. Makes for an interesting story though, and who knows, maybe someone turned it into a time capsule."

Here is a youtube video from someone who claimed to witness the safe being cleaned out:
