I will save the chip as scanned and not use Photoshop to circular crop the chip.

For my individual situation I think doing all of the Photoshop "hard work" ends up accomplishing the same thing as the original scan. Of course the original scan will not have the opaque background. One advantage is I can choose what color background I want for any particular chip to show off the chip's depth and colors.
