Authentication source reliability

I have recently posted two items on this board.
The source for my information came from 'Kregg's Guide to the Records of The United States Playing Card Co.'
Both items are listed therein as being attributed to California.
One in San Diego and one in Jackson
In attempting to obtain a name or establishment I posted scans of each.
Seems others deem these items to be either generic, Mexican, midwest or the like.
My question: Is there any reliability to a publication by a person who states they personally viewed records and took pictures at a specific location and the published said information?
It sort of sounds like each individual works on the thought 'I have made up my mind, don't confuse me with facts'.
I am attempting to make my sons memorial the best I can and in so doing do not want to include false or misleading information.
Right now I am in limbo.
Wishing all enough,
