1955 Chevrolet

Edward N. Cole designed the 1955 Chevrolet from scratch in May 1952 at General Motors'
request. Chevrolet unveiled "the hot one" in late 1954 to accolades that enticed youthful
buyers who demanded "sizzling" performance.

The big news for the 1955 Chevrolet was the introduction of the 265 cubic inch V8 engine.
The new engine was lighter than the six cylinder and much more powerful, cranking out
162 horsepower with a standard transmission and 170 horsepower when equipped with the
PowerGlide automatic. An optional 180 horsepower version tagged "Power-Pak" featured a
four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts.

The body styling was longer, lower and boxier. Featured was a wrap-around windshield and
a beltline dip below the rear side window.

The two-door 1955 Chevy Bel Air gold sport coupe became the 50 millionth U.S. General Motors
automobile produced. The Flint, Michigan assembly plant rolled out those honors. It continued
to be a banner year for GM as over 1.7 million units rolled off assembly lines.

The first hardtop wagon, the Nomad, was introduced in the 1955 Chevrolet lineup. 1955 rolled out
8,386 of Chevy's first hardtop wagon, the two-door Nomad. Revving up Chevy's new "Motoramic"
styling were the powerful, yet light, 265 cubic inch V-8 or optional "Turbo-Fire" V-8 engines.

Chevy offered nearly 50 accessories including a traffic light viewer, electric shaver, foot-operated
windshield washer and tissue dispenser. A gas tank filler guard, door and fender guards kept paint
from chipping off the two-toned body.
