Can't help but to respond Ike.I grew up in Spring Lake Heights and I know long before Bruce Springsteen introduced Asbury Park to a nation of younger people,it had it's history.
The Berkely-Carteret hotel must have played host to some card games one would think?
I am in the Food and Beverage industry and 20 some years ago I knew a much older than me chef that worked at the hotel.
He once was called for room service- Franks and Beans- request came personally from Judy Garland,(Who was the main act that weekend)not for her,but for her little daughter Liza..He came up with them somehow.
As a kid in High school I had much closer ties with the Essex-Sussex and the Monmouth hotels in Spring Lake, washing dishes etc and it was a very sad day when me and friends watched from the boardwalk as a wrecking ball tore down the Monmouth.Couple years after that Resorts opened in AC.
