SFO's oldest business closes shop
By Michael Cabanatuan, Chronicle Staff Writer | April 2, 2002
San Francisco International Airport was but a dirt landing strip named Mills Field and its only structure a small wooden administration building when ABC Cigar Co. became its first tenant. In 1927 the year Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic Daniel Leahy and his ABC partners opened the fledgling airport's first business -- a newsstand and lunch counter. Late Sunday night Leahy's granddaughter Marsha Givens locked the doors of ABC's latest airport business -- a candy card and flower shop named San Francisco Expressions -- ending 75 years of a family-run business at SFO. "I'm going to miss the excitement and diversity of the airport the dynamics of it" Givens sitting in ABC Cigar's small utilitarian office said yesterday.
