Terry knew the answer

Its made of formaldehyde.
Once it starts degrading there is nothing you can do.
It can also contaminate any other pieces it comes near to.
At some stage in its life it was no doubt stored in humid conditions. That is what started the degrading process. Would not have been visible for years.
Airtites are the best option, and some people coat the pieces with varnish first.
