It now looks like a bill could pass, given the use of every trick in the book in Washington. It would be easy to conclude that an almost inevitible Republican landslide in 2010 and 2012 could change the bill, but the current leegislators will make that difficult or impossible, so the key seems to keep the current bill off the books and force the Dems to consider more reasonable Health Care ideas (tort reform, across state insurance, etc.)

To compare the likely costs of this mess with Medicare Plan D inacted in 2007 is apples and oranges. At most that bill is costing $7-8 million a year. This monster would bankrupt the country. At the end of the day, it will be interesting to see if the legislators will be willing to face extreme pressure in the next election by voting with the special interest groups pushing this bill. If they do....say goodbye to their jobs in many cases.
