Re: Just a question
In Response To: Just a question ()

I'm sure I have the largest collection of crest & seals. However, there really isn't anyone else that has limited their collection of clay chips to only c&s. Most other collectors diversify. For example, Robert Eisenstadt has a large collection of crest and seals. However, if you look at his site, he collects a zillion other gambling related items. Allan Myers had a large collection (now sold). But Allan also collected illegals and ivory. Travis Lewin, a c&s, collector also collects illegals and ivory. Avee Heifetz had a great collection (most of which I bought) now is limited to Cuba. Barry Weintraub had a nice collection (most of which I bought) now collects WA and CA. Steve Passalacqua has a really great collection. However, Steve isn't as single minded and nutty as I am for c&s. Then there are the new comers like Jim Forsman, Ernie Norgard and Smitty. Luckily I have a lead of a couple of years on them. Lastly, two with great c&s collections are Bud Meyer and Kenny Craig. Fortunately for me they are my best friends in the hobby. Both Bud and Kenny would send me any c&s they found before even keeping one for themselves.

Regarding a guide, Howdy and Kregg Herz wrote a guide on c&s produced by USPC. Years ago Howdy was allowed inside the USPC museum and was allowed to photograph salesman's sample books. The photos, I'm guessing, represent about 60% of all chips made (except for BPOEs for which there were c&s made for I would guess over 500 BPOEs). If you take a look at my website, click on the red USPC link in the top right hand corner . It will show the actual photo from USPC. The photos from the sample books are the only USPC records. Jim Blanchard of ASM does have some BURT records on c&s. However, most Burt records were destroyed. There is no price guide. Robert Eisenstadt provides sale prices for c&s that he has for sale. Some day I may put together a guide (hopefully with the help of Eisenstadt, Passalacqua, Lewin, et al). One of these days I'll set up pages on my site to show scans of c&s that I've received from others (that I don't have, of course).

I don't find c&s on a regular basis. I might average 3 or 4 a month. Of course years ago it was more like 20 a month.

Regarding what is a c&s, here is the article that got me started.
