Grammatical error: singular subject, plural verb

The basic rule states that a singular subject takes a singular verb, while a plural subject takes a plural verb. "Society" is singular, and should be followed by singular verb "invites". Would be correct as printed if it said something like "the members of the ... Society" invite you.
