The Chip Board Archive 20

thanks Steve, dont get me wrong

I think the chip books as a reference are invaluable, but as price guides I just dont get it. Whats great about this hobby is there's a niche for everyone. 95% of my collection are chips that are a few dollars over face. I may have a dozen chips that are "worth" 75 to 100 bucks and maybe 30 to 50 that might be considered 30 to 40 bucks. One guide I want to get is Luke Rapleys guide on Indian chips, when I buy that, I will be buying it for a reference. I did pick up a few years ago TCR (outdated) for reference from a member that was in town for 8 bucks, but since my move, its packed away and I cant put my hands on it. So when sands is talking about a Z chip, I have no clue, and I dont care because I'm never going to buy a chip thats 1K. What I would like a price guide for is when I'm scouting ebay. I have a couple examples that I wont post here but will send you a email later and maybe you can give me a clue....case in point....I was just looking at a chip with an R8 rating...great condition, I dont know the value of an R8 chip, the seller implied 500 bucks...the chip sold for 30 bucks..I see listings all the time for chips that claim to be worth 1K on the low end...chips in great condition, that end up selling for 200 bucks. Another case in point, chip that has a stated value of say 75 to 100.00. I assume the 75 is for avg condition and 100 for very good.....this chip looks mint....so whats a good price for this chip?take maybe 20% of of 100 off, so say 80 bucks? on the high end? chip sold for 30 bucks....I see this all the time. A few years ago I ran across this guy that had 3 100.00 Orbit Inn's, I think he wanted 110 each but if I bought all 3 he would sell them for 75 each...now I see this chip on ebay and it does sell for 75 to 100 bucks.....I got this chip right before the 2008 convention....at the convention, while taking a smoke break, I got to talking to this fellow that was so happy he found a chip that he had been looking for, for a long time.....and he said he got it for 175.00....what chip? a 100.00 Orbit Inn....so I understand a chip will sell for whatever a buyer is willing to pay....but the ebay examples that I stated, I see it happen over and over again...so again why are chips "valued" at 500.00 , when I see them selling over and over again for 30-75 bucks?
