Poker Mishap Question

I know I can always come to this board for a straight answer on anything. So here we go.

No limit texas holdem. $1-$2

I am dealing to a table of ten. The board is set with the flop, turn and river spread for everyone to see. We are heads up between player in seat 3 and player in seat 10.

When the river comes seat #3 bets $28 all in. Player in seat #10 reluctantly calls the $28.

Now...there is about $90 in the pot. Player in seat #3 shows that he has hit a straight on the river. Player in seat #10 responds verbally " it figures" and dejectedly flips his cards into the air knowing he has lost the hand. The cards fall from about two feet and at least one card stirkes my hand on the way down. Both cards land on the muck....face up. Several of us note that seat #10 has hit a full house. He did not see it as it turns out. When we call out that he has indeed won the pot with a full house seat #3 protests loudly that the cards are mucked and the hand is dead.

Turns out that several at the table insisted that because the cards both landed face up for all to see, then the hand is live and seat #10 wins.

Because we did not know for sure what to do, I decided to split the pot between the two players. The fact remains that most in the room thought player #10 mucked his cards and they were dead. But there were several that were sure the hand was live and should have taken the pot.

These guys are both friends of mine and I would like to give them the correct ruling on this event.

Little help please???

Jim
