Re: Fuller's Index says...
In Response To: Las Vegas address question ()

Hwy. 91 3131 Las Vegas 13th So. for the Stork Club.

I suspect that 13th So is a typo...should say 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. So.

I've always considered L.A. Highway, Highway 91, 5th Street, The Strip (only the section that runs roughly from the Sahara to the Hacienda), to refer to the same road. It had another name too, earlier, but I can't remember what it was... sad

1939 phone book lists Bates Auto Camp on the L A Hwy., also Calneva Auto Court and Cotton Wood Auto Court; E.J. Hunter (whoever he was) had an office on the L A Highway

Chick's Grill is listed on S. 5th Street (no street number); Chuck Wagon was at 421 S. 5th; there's a home listed at 216 N. 5th; another home listed at 221 N. 5th; The Old Ranch was listed on N. 5th.

From those addresses I'd guess that, in 1939 anyway, maybe downtown (Las Vegas City Limits?) it was called 5th Street...on the outskirts of town it was called the L A. Highway?

In 1945 the El Rancho Vegas is listed as "El Rancho Hotel LA Hwy 91.....1300"
Last Frontier Hotel is listed on L A Hwy.

By the 1950 phone book the El Rancho Hotel has become the "El Rancho Vegas Hotel LA Hwy"

Something kind of interesting in the 1956 yellow pages...In the listings for the Hotel catagory, The Sands is listed at 3317 S. 5th; El Rancho Vegas Hotel L A Hwy; Sahara Hotel L A Hwy; Desert Inn L A Hwy. All 4 of those have display ads, and all 4 display ads show the location as Highway 91.

we have a 10 year phone book gap sad

In 1966 they're using the Las Vegas Blvd. So. addresses. For whatever it's worth...The Sands was listed at 3355 Las Vegas Blvd South...but 10 years earlier they were listed at 3317 South 5th. Street numbers must have been changed along with the street name. vbg
