Computer question from you experts

Okay, I used to know a bit about computers but more options came out and I just stopped paying attention.

I need a new computer as my old one finally took a crap. I want a desktop because I think you get a bit more for the money and I have a work laptop that I can use when I need portability. the question is, what processor should I be looking for? I don't want it to be outdated in a year but then i don't do too much processor intensive stuff either. Just the normal stuff. I'd rather pay a tad more today to allow me an extra year or two worth of use out of it though.

I've always been partial to Intel but I guess I don't have a really good reason for it. they were just the first ones on the block and I guess I always trusted them.

I saw a Qaud Core Q8300 system for not a lot of money but i don't know much about this chipset. I guess the newest chips are the i7 but is this maybe overkill? I don't need a package and just the CPU system with an i7 seems to be minimum 1200 bucks. I was hoping to spend under a thousand if possible.

any suggestions and sources for good deals would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Michael
