Re: Brian Watts/Jim Follis
In Response To: Brian Watts/Jim Follis ()

David,

I had a lengthly coversation with a support person at the company who is doing the hosting of Greg's dedicated unix server. I explained our situation and he communicated to me that he really couldn't give out any information or help until they are given proper documentation that I (or someone else) has been authorized to call on the Greg's account.

I was able to talk him into looking at the server and resetting the system clock for us. While he was doing that, he asked what date was on the posts. It sounded like he wasn't particularly seeing a problem... So I checked and sure enough the most recent posts (approx twenty posts or so) had a more reasonable date/timestamp.

I did notice that those posts were still working against PDT instead of CDT. As discussed on a different thread, that doesn't bother me but curious to see if he could adjust that for us. As a result, I asked if he would adjust the clock. He declined to do so initially but he realizes our situation so he went ahead and did it. I then made a post and it had no affect whatsoever on the time picked up by the BBS software. This was a good experiement for me as now it appears to me that the source of the current date/timestamp must be getting pulled from a different source... maybe even a clock from the internet... That might explain why Greg was not able to control it.

A couple days earlier I did establish contact with the developer who wrote the BBS software. He remembers working with Greg off and on over the past ten years. He had some kind words to say about Greg as well. He said that he would offer us some limited general advice to "pay back" the help that Greg gave him a couple years ago on some large volume data for testing purposes it sounds. I will send him a message about our event yesterday and see what he has to say about it.

I also sent Carol an email to let her know what documentation they told me would be required before anyone could have true access to the hosting company support desk or access to servers to root level. I know she is swamped with other family and business matters right now. I'm sure when she has the time, she will look into it.
