I would think that the chip and the clip would contract the same amount+-... but if you placed the face of the chip on a piece of dry ice while heating the clip, the chip would contract & the metal would expand... I don't know if it would release the chip or destroy both but it is probably safer and more effective than mixing sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate.
