I am not a subject matter expert by any means but i was told that the old plaques and jetons were often porcelain coated with nacre, a form of mother of pearl. Other samples were early ceramic composites often engraved or inlayed with copper, bronze, silver, etc. I would love to hear others opinion as I make no claim to the validity of this answer other than what I was told when i asked someone.
