One of my favorite forms of money was playing cards. When the French army in Canada ran out of coin and currency, their commander took playing cards, signed them, and added the paycheck denomination. He promised that when the boat arrived with cash, the cards could be redeemed. Until the boat arrived, the soldiers used the cards like cash, and the local merchants accepted them.
